The tolerance that ends an argument

A case is machined to a number before it is machined to a look. The dimension is set, the tolerance is stated, and the two sides of that tolerance are the only argument a bench allows.

A finisher and a movement do not disagree about beauty. They disagree about a fit: whether a case back seats flush, whether a crown threads true, whether a bezel sits without a gap that light can find. Every one of those disagreements is closed by a number, not a preference.

The gauge is checked against the drawing, not against the eye. A surface that looks correct and measures wrong is wrong. A surface that measures correct and looks plain is finished anyway, because the standard was never about how it looks under argument. It was about what it measures.

This is the discipline The Standard states in one line and Craft performs in four. The Journal exists to say it plainly, once: a tolerance is not a limit on the work. It is the only thing that ends a disagreement about it.
